The Center for Korean Women & Politics(CKWP) will virtually hold the International Conference on North Korean Women and Society Studies 2021 on August 24 (Tue) to 25 (Wed). The theme of the conference this year is “The Future of North Korean Women in COVID-19 Pandemic: Risk or Opportunity.” Recently, there are signs that North Korea is returning to the past of the Kim Jong-il regime amidst a new economic crisis caused by the pandemic and the prolonged economic sanctions, In this situation, this conference examines the present of North Korean women and forecasts their future by exploring the changes in female power elites who once emerged to hold the real power and women who drove the country’s black economy in jangmadang markets in the aspects of politics, economy, and culture.
